View Full Version : opinions on e30 exhaust

I need a muffler for the e30. I was going to go with Stebro, but find they're hard to deal with and kind of expensive for what you get.

I can get an Ireland Engineering stainless bat back for about $300 + shipping (ebay).

But what I'd prefer to do is get a Magnaflow dual in / out with some tips ($150 + shipping) and get a local shop to install it. I really like the one on my 540 (though it was a little loud, lol).

Anyone have advice? Anyone know a shop that can do the welding work?

Oldskoole30, did I read that you have a magnaflow somewhere? Is it a dual?

Im switching to the Magnaflow 14815 in the summer I think .. utube has a few good videos for e30 magnaflow and it sounds good for the price... did yours quite down after awhile on the 540? I realy dont want something too loud anymore

I have always loved the sound of remus exhausts but the are fairly expensive and getting harder to find. You might be able to locate a universal one with dual inlets. Besides that I love the sound of my stock muffler/ hollow cat but considering you still need etest thats probably not the right road for you. The IE exhaust seems like a fairly good deal at 300 for a cat back.

Lee got all his custom 3" exhaust mounted at autovation? I think it's in stittsville and they seem to do a good job. We'll be able to tell better in the spring when it comes out of storage. The price was also extremely fair and the guys were super nice plus the owner has a blower on his e36 m3.

Found their site: http://www.autovation.ca/

the midas in bells corners is rumored to do decent custom exhaust work

Dan's Muffler and Brake out in Metcalfe did the custom work on my old 300ZX (Dynomax cat and muffler with 2.5" piping), and the repair work on my late father's wagon. He does good work, and his prices are fair. He custom bends the pipe -- it's not mandrel bent, but at least they are smooth bends, unlike the crinkle bends some places sell.

Haha, ya, the 5er was loud. VERY loud. No, it didn't quite down at all. How could it, it was basically a straight pipe!

Anyway, thanks for the feedback / links. I have dealt with Midas in Bells Corners and found them to be very helpful. I'll stop in there and see if they would be up for doing it, otherwise, I'll go see autovation. They're both near my work.

Thanks for the help!

Edit...just as a side note, I still say the best exhaust for the e30 is no exhaust.:)

Ya, quite a few.. the first three here are likely what my car will be done like:

http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=e30+14815&search_type=

I will likely replace the cat with a hiflow i have in the basement, then a glasspack as a resonator, then 2.25 pipe to the muffler.

I might just cheap out tho and get the dude to just weld this puppy on for now. If its cheap now, i won't be upset about wrecking it and spending more later if I don't like it.

You're going to get raped on brokerage fees. I just shipped $120 worth of boxing gloves for $80 after brokerage fees.

Though, I learned you can give Ogdensburg as a shipping address and pick it up from there (45 minutes away) and avoid paying that fee. Might be too late to help you guys though.

BTW, bear, are you sure you have the right tracking number? Confirm with the seller, only they can release the tracking number to you. It usually starts with a 1Z with UPS I believe.

BTW, Jason. I need a moto safety done asap. Shady places that can use telekinetic powers to examine my bike are accepted.

everlast
04-16-2008, 09:58 PM
Hottexhaust are from canada, that's why I bought from them. Their automated system emailed us tracking numbers as they're entered into the transit system. This doesn't mean the package is even picked/packed yet though. There could be a back order type of problem or something.

I usually pick everything else up in Massena if its a US shipped item. The cornwall border is very forgiving of accepted values.

What kind of bike did you get? Honestly, there aren't a lot of things on a bike that I'd let slip for safety and still ride it. The guys at Gearhead in Bell's corners are very knowledgable and straight up. Ask for Bruce.

Pics of the bike or ban.

Maybe brakes, but who needs those anyway. :P

I just want to be able to drive it and get it off the previous owner's lot. My main concern is I don't want to take it somewhere, and be held hostage for fixing things because they know I can't drive it until they fix it.

I picked up a '79 Honda CM400T. Seen here:

http://www.usedottawa.com/classified-ad/5420623

It's in pretty good shape, and it may not even have any safety issues that I can tell. Tires, are okay. Needs a new electric starter though. Works off the kick starter, idles well.

Ps. I may café it. :P

You should continue to look around. My buddy's '79 is insured for about $400 a year. Call a couple brokers, not company's. Its their job to get you good rates and coverage.

Jamil20
04-17-2008, 04:05 PM
I tried calling around, that's the cheapest I got, and it's through my existing insurance company.

I do have an at-fault accident on my record, which is hurting me right now. I have to wait until next year before the rates go down significantly.

everlast

This bike is a little less than legal.. There don't appear to be any signals nor mirrors, which muddy up the image considerably. But its really easy to build a bike like this.

The above is a Yamaha SRX i think, and there has been one for sale for a while now on UsedOttawa. They look great before any mods even.

Basically take any old bike, put on some clubman bars, bar end mirrors, strip the back end, new lights, polish anything worthwhile and paint everything else, and boom, cafe racer.

dafrpa
04-22-2008, 10:52 PM
Is it legal?

Removing or modifying fenders, chain guards, exhaust (nearly all aftermarket state off-road or racing use only), lights and lots of other stuff is illegal. That said, people do it all the time, and get warnings to go back to stock if/when they're stopped. There may be issues obtaining safety checks as well, so get it safetied first, THEN start modding.

The local bike board (http://www.ott-motorcycles.ca)

You left out the hardest parts. :)

Rearset controls. Usually means mounting new controls to the passenger footpegs so you can lean forward for a more race-like stance. This often means fabricating the mounting plates and also the linkages to the rear-brake/shifter.

Knee dents in your tank, but I think my tank is too small for this.

Seat modification. Take off the stock seat and fabricate a new one with the hump in the back. These usually sit a lot lower than stock.

I think the inlet size on the 815 might be too small though. From what I've read it's 2.25" and the 540 pipe is 2.75". So I dunno. The last thing I want is a bottle neck at the muffler.

everlast
04-23-2008, 11:08 AM
The inlet on all of the mufflers with tips are 2.25" unfortunately. I don't imagine it creates much back pressure, considering you can see right through the muffler to the other end, but it would create a little.
