hey guys, my first second and third gear are making a knocking noise under load and when siting in neutral. when i push the clutch in the knock stops. im guessing its the syncros? but i dunno...
how much is a 5 speed rebuild anyone know? or would a straight up swap in a different tranny be easier.
P.S. anyone selling a good condition eta tranny?
Thanks, Vic

i dont know how much it would cost but it would be ridiculously expensive. you're better off finding a used one in good condition

Proper rebuild will be more $$$ then your car is worth....Get a good used one, but make sure its from an ETA not an I, since you need to bolt the crank sensors on the belhousing....

Input layshaft bearing. Very very very common on e30 transmissions. Mine has 550k on it and while it makes a huge racket, it still works fine. Just keep driving, it will probably outlive the car. If the trans jumps out of gear or grinds into gears, then you have a problem.
FYI, this is the sound my trans makes:
<object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bKBuGYZycNY&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bKBuGYZycNY&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
And it still works fine. I have never heard another e30 trans as loud as this one, so if mine works, yours will too *th-up*

ya, it doesnt grind or jump out of gear, it just knocks,
great.. one more reason to turn up the music while drivin my car.
btw could that bearing be replaced without a huge hassle, whenever i get the tranny off for a new clutch?

My e30 beater does it also, on and off. Always figured it was the throw out bearing, but it's not worth going in there until something breaks or I need a clutch.
Which i've had in my room expecting it to go one day, but in almost 2 years, several autox, its still going.
I believe Zimmie got a 5spd tranny rebuilt for around $500, so it can't be that expensive. I'd perfer a low mileage used one thou.

You might be lucky and it might just be the pilot bearing, but I doubt it. That bearing can not be replaced unless you completely disassemble the transmission.
